Building in the New Forest: What You Need to Know

Navigating planning regulations in the New Forest National Park can be complex, but it’s essential for protecting the region’s unique charm. Here are our 5 key points to consider:

  1. Understand the context of the site and how you're new building or extension can compliment, harmonise or enhance it.

  2. Use materials that are locally sourced, are appropriate and relate to the NFNPA design guides.

  3. Community engagement can provide local people a clearer understanding of your scheme and prevent negative feedback and letters of objection from local interested parties.

  4. Prepare all required planning reports, such as Arboricultural, Ecology, and Heritage. Bat and mammal surveys are seasonal, so schedule these accordingly. Note that reports are valid for 18 months—plan ahead to avoid delays.

  5. After planning permission, be ready to address any Planning Conditions before construction. These can be detailed and require careful preparation.
